SOUTH AUSTRALIAN Todd Hazelwood has confirmed he will race the 2014 Dunlop Development Series, racing with Queensland-based team Matt Stone Racing.

The 18-year-old will race in an ex-Stone Brother Racing’s Ford FG Falcon, making his debut with the team at his home round in Adelaide, the Clipsal 500.

Hazelwood is excited to announce his new venture into the series and believes this is a massive step forward for his racing career.

“I’m very proud and excited to be part of this year’s championship, it was a huge challenge by everyone involved to make this happen and I can’t wait to kick the year off at my home event, the Clipsal 500,” Hazelwood said.

“The year will be a steep learning curve for me and I will be going into the championship with a realistic mindset … but like anyone else in the field, I want to perform at my best and I believe I have one of the best packages to do that.”

The teenager had his first test day with the team last week at Queensland Raceway, which was a great success.

“My first test day last week was very productive and it’s a pleasure to work with such an experienced and professional team, they know how to maximise the potential out of both the driver and the race car which will be a massive bonus for my first season.”

Team owner Matt Stone was also impressed with Hazelwood’s first test and looks forward to the first round in Adelaide.
“It’s good to run a rookie again in a V8 and we were impressed with Todd’s ability to quickly adapt to driving a V8 and had a very productive day testing,” Stone said.

“We have faith that Todd has the skill to drive the car competitively at Clipsal and we will be working on his race-craft and comfort ability with all the other cars around him.

“It can be very daunting racing a V8 around a street circuit but we have every faith that Todd will continue to impress.”

Hazelwood also has worked hard in the off-season to gain the support of Tecalemit, Airtec, Repco, Da Mario’s Pizza, Slape & Sons, Gadget Graphics and Winning Spirit.

The Bloke’s Guide to Valentine’s Day

Pop Culture, Spultured

4f6f3ee022f4d

Well, it’s that time of year again and you’re thinking, “What the hell does this Valentine’s Day shit”mean? To be honest – no one really knows. Yet, of course, the retail chains L-O-V-E to take advantage of this non-holiday event.

But more importantly, you’re thinking, does my girl even care? Coming from a tomboy like myself, yes, oh God, she definitely does.

So here are some tips.

She will tell you that she doesn’t care.
Earth-to-man, she really does dig this day, and she’s just saying that so she doesn’t look selfish.

Just buy something.
If she’s not too materialistic, she won’t care if it’s just a photo frame with you in it. Girls aren’t as complex as you think.

Tell her she’s beautiful.
This is something guys struggle to do, and it’s gentlemen like – think brownie points. Plus, it’s better than calling her sex-muffin.

If you’re single, get out of the friend-zone.
This is the time, don’t be a pussy; what’s the worst she could do? I mean, she could say no, but at least you can crawl back into that friend-zone you just tried to escape.

Look and smell nice.
If you’re a tradie, make the extra effort to go home and trade in the fluoro for a nice button-up shirt with a squirt of cologne, that way when you’re running late, she can forgive you because you look better than usual.

Don’t be cliché.
The worst thing you can do to a girl is freak her out, so if you’re thinking of popping the question with a bottle of champagne to a girl you’ve known for ten-minutes, just don’t.

Remind her of an event.
Something very extreme for guys to do, but just think how nice it would be to go down to the beach where you guys had your first date, or whatever.

Don’t freak out.
Just show your affection more on this day than ever. That way she can brag to everyone and all-that-jazz.

Nervous? Yeah, good.
This shows you actually care about this girl. And if you do love her, just be yourself and do something nice. I generally report motorsport for Spultured, so don’t question my theories… they will work.

The first test of the season saw newly-signed Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen top the time sheets, with Lewis Hamilton second quickest despite hitting the wall due to a front-wing failure.

The crash put an end to Mercedes’ day, with the team expected to return to the track today with an updated front nose.

Valterri Bottas was third fastest with Williams, ahead of Sergio Perez from Force India, Jean Eric-Vergne and Esteban Gutierrez.

Raikkonen endured the most laps with 31, despite the car coming to a halt after the first five corners of the Jerez circuit.

Current world champion Sebastian Vettel also took to the circuit, but did not register a flying lap.

The new McLaren remained in the garage throughout the test with the team working on electrical faults with the car, with Marussia not making an appearance until later in the week.

V8 Utes has a strong place in the heart of Australian motorsport and 20 year old Adam Marjoram is set to make his 2014 racing campaign stronger than ever.

While studying a double degree of Economics and Commerce and racing all over Australia, this year is set to be a challenging and exciting year for the Western Australian.

Marjoram was recently signed as part of V8 Supercar’s Erebus Motorsport Academy and Erebus Motorsport V8 Ute team, making his debut round at Adelaide’s Clipsal 500 look very strong.

The V8 Ute driver recently caught up with Fiasco Sports’ journalist Loren Hazelwood to talk about his exciting up-coming season.

Loren: You had a great debut season in the V8 Ute series last year, how will this help your 2014 campaign?

Adam: Yeah, it was a great year learning all the tracks and handle the V8 Utes – they’re very different to any other form of race car! For 2014, I have signed with the Erebus V8 Ute team and the Erebus Academy. With the resources and access to all areas with Erebus, it will help me to develop as a driver on and off the track and provide me with a really competitive car. Hopefully we can push the top 5 consistently!

Loren: Now you just mentioned that Erebus Motorsport have signed you as a ute driver, will their experience in V8 Supercars be beneficial for your second season in V8 Utes?

Adam: For sure, Erebus are an extremely professional outfit and many of the things they have learned in V8 Supercars can be transferred to the V8 Ute team, whether it be technical or PR related.

Loren: You started out your racing career in sprint kart racing all over Australia, how has this helped in getting yourself to the level you are at today?

Adam: Karting is a great base for any young driver. It allows you to learn the fundamentals of racing and race craft. Transitioning into car racing is a hard process, however, the one thing you never lose is that race craft. Coming from Perth, you are very isolated; therefore you really have to travel abroad to race where the competition is. Because of this I was always learning new tracks; this really develops the adaptability of the driver so that when they are immersed into a new environment they can pick it up as quick as possible.

Loren: What has the V8 Ute experience been like?

Adam: It has been amazing! To only be in the car racing scene for two years and getting the chance to race at places like Bathurst, Surfers Paradise and in front of my home crowd at Barbagallo [Perth], has been amazing. I have learned so much about racing over the 2013 season…the tracks, the cars, the media. It has just been a dream come true for me! When I go to the track I am honestly like a kid in a candy shop, there is nowhere else I’d rather be!

Loren: You unfortunately had a massive crash last year at the Gold Coast 500 and had to replace the car for the final round at Sydney, how did you take that challenge of overcoming a crash and coming to grips with a new car?

Adam: Yeah, that was definitely the biggest crash I had been in. You race knowing that accidents like that happen, but you just never expect it to happen to you. I felt pretty sore after the crash as you’d expect, but went straight into exams so I couldn’t see anyone about it! I have since seen a physio, and all is well now. But I was very lucky to get another V8 Ute for the Sydney 500. Unfortunately we were plagued with problems from chronic understeer to overheating engines. That dropped us three positions in the Championship and down to third in the Rookie of the Year Championship which was not ideal.

Loren: You’ve been busy juggling university studies and racing, do you have anything else planned for 2014?

Adam: Yeah, has been a busy, busy year! As part of the Erebus Academy I will be travelling to more V8 Supercar rounds outside of the V8 Ute calendar to learn and help the team. Otherwise, I am looking at getting back into a kart back here in Perth to keep my eye in a little more and keep up the training so that I am at my physical peak whenever I jump into a car! There also may be a couple of cool little things pop up during the year …you’ll have to keep posted.

Loren: The team here at Fiasco Sports will definitely be watching you this year! Is there anyone you would like to thank?

Adam: Thanks! Look everyone that has been instrumental in forging my Motorsport Career has been amazing, namely the support from Auto One, Valvoline, Supercharge Batteries, Nova, my team last year – Williams Race Tech – and and my new team, Erebus Motorsport.

Loren: Thank you very much Adam, catch you on the track!

Double points to be awarded in 2014 F1 finale

Fiasco Sports, Formula 1

The FIA today have announced that double points will be received in a bid to bring excitement to the final race of the Formula 1 Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships.

The final round of the FIA Formula 1 calendar will see double points awarded for the 2014 season.

This move is one of many made recently by the Formula 1 Commission and Strategy Groups this week.

The change was made to increase the fight of the Formula 1 title going into the final round of 2014, as current Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel won this years title with few rounds to spare.

This change will also apply to not only the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship, but also the Contructors’ Championship.

If this system was implement over the last six years, two of the final results of the Drivers’ championships would have been different, Felipe Massa would have pipped Lewis Hamilton in 2008 and Fernando Alonso would have won Vettel’s world championship last year.

Other changes for the 2014 FIA Formula 1 season include drivers’ being able to choose their numbers, rather than run the number the constructor finished the previous year, with the drivers’ championship order to be used to resolve any issues over number allocation.

A budget cap for 2015 is also currently being discussed by the Commission and Strategy Group to keep the costs fair for each team.

Ladies and gentlemen, here is Spultured’s list of Australian motorsport’s top ten crashes of 2013.

Being involved with motorsport, you see the highest of highs – with drivers standing on the podium and spraying champagne, yet also the lowest of lows – as drivers face death as they tumble and crash at unbelievably high speeds. And this year, like every year, our Aussie drivers showed just how strong and safe these racing cars are.

Note: none of these crashes were fatal and all drivers walked away with non-life threatening injuries.
