The first test of the season saw newly-signed Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen top the time sheets, with Lewis Hamilton second quickest despite hitting the wall due to a front-wing failure.
The crash put an end to Mercedes’ day, with the team expected to return to the track today with an updated front nose.
Valterri Bottas was third fastest with Williams, ahead of Sergio Perez from Force India, Jean Eric-Vergne and Esteban Gutierrez.
Raikkonen endured the most laps with 31, despite the car coming to a halt after the first five corners of the Jerez circuit.
Current world champion Sebastian Vettel also took to the circuit, but did not register a flying lap.
The new McLaren remained in the garage throughout the test with the team working on electrical faults with the car, with Marussia not making an appearance until later in the week.
