Championship ready to rumble in Perth

The V8 Supercars Championship is set to take off, with the series ready to race at the Perth 400 held at Barbagallo Raceway.

With the championship well underway and the Perth weather putting on a good show, the V8 Supercars drivers are race ready for the fifth round of the series.

Fabian Coulthard is looking like the favourite for the race win tomorrow in his Brad Jones Racing Holden, finishing fastest in both Practice 1 and Practice 3.

Volvo youngster Scott McLaughlin has also set the pace, finishing Practice 2 on top by one-quarter of a second.

Current championship leader Mark Winterbottom finished inside the top six in all three sessions, being in a consistent position to extend his championship lead in his Ford Peformance Racing Falcon.

Ford Performance Racing’s other drivers Chaz Mostert and David Reynolds are also looking on the money, finishing inside the top ten in all three open-practice sessions today.

Local driver Garth Tander struggled today on home soil, finishing a best of 13th position in Practice 1.

Holden Racing Team’s James Courtney was taking it up to Coulthard in the opening session, missing the fastest lap by only 0.0075s.

The first Mercedes driver was Will Davison, finishing in fifth in Practice 2.

Tomorrow’s race will see the split qualifying and race format, with two qualifying sessions and two 100km races, which can be seen live on Channel Seven’s coverage of the V8 Supercars Championship.

V8s: van Gisbergen takes double victory at Melbourne

Shane van Gisbergen has kicked off a great start to the WSS Security V8 Supercar round at this year’s Australian Grand Prix.

Kiwi Shane van Gisbergen has shown-up the locals and taken a double victory during Races 1 and 2 at the Australian Grand Prix.

Even though van Gisbergen qualified second, he managed to drag Michael Caruso off the start line in a close rolling start, driving away from rivals Jamie Whincup and Scott McLaughlin.

Race 1 opened up a battle between Whincup and McLaughlin for second, with Whincup suffering an after-race penalty, forcing McLaughlin wide and on to the grass while racing on the pit straight.

Whincup later suffered a five-place penalty, giving McLaughlin second and Caruso third for Race 1.

Race 2 saw van Gisbergen have another great start, beating McLaughlin off the start line, with the field going three wide into Turns 1 and 2 at the Albert Park circuit.

McLaughlin ran wide at Turn 11, opening up the door for Craig Lowndes and Fabian Coulthard, with the young Volvo driver slipping back to fifth.

The 12-lap race saw a small battle between Lowndes and van Gisbergen, but the Kiwi was proven too strong, taking two wins from two starts.

There will be another two 12-lap WSS Security V8 Supercar races over Saturday and Sunday of the Australian Grand Prix.

Dunlop Development Series stronger than ever

Each year the V8 Dunlop Development Series grows and this year’s series is set to be huge with 30 entries confirmed for the opening round at Adelaide’s Clipsal 500.

The Official V8 Supercars Series kicks off this week on Adelaide’s streets, with all eyes on the Dunlop Development Series, kicking off the season with 30 entries confirmed.

After last year’s stellar entry list including the names of Casey Stoner, Chaz Mostert, Jack Perkins, Dale Wood and Steve Owen, 2014 is once again looking to be a strong season and will also be a debut for many young and talented drivers.

One driver looking particularly strong for this year is Ash Walsh, who will be racing under Matt Stone Racing for the third year after picking up five race wins in the series last year, just missing out on the title.

Ford Performance Racing are also coming back into the series after a one-year absence, partnering up with young Cameron Waters in an Enzed sponsored FG Falcon.

Ex-V8 Supercar drivers will also make-up the grid again, with Paul Dumbrell making his way into the series this year, alongside Paul Morris and Taz Douglas.

Erebus today also announced they will make their debut into the series, with their Erebus Academy driver Jack Le Brocq who recently finished third in the Bathurst 12-Hour race is set to make his debut into the series with Image Racing.

Adelaide-based team THR Racing Developments have progressed from the Kumho V8 series to the big stage of Dunlop Series, with Jordan Ormsby and Jay Verdnik the two confirmed drivers for the first round, with Josh Hunter and Matthew Hansen also making the jump from Kumho to Dunlop series.

Two Formula 3 drivers are also set to make their debut into the series this year, with Gold Star champion Tim Macrow to race with Gallagher Motorsport, and winner of Shannons Supercar Showdown, Todd Hazelwood, to compete under Matt Stone Racing.

Brad Jones Racing will also be another team to look out for, with Andrew Jones and Chris Pither set to steer their VE Commodores this year.

Reigning Dunlop Series team MW Motorsport will once again be strong a three-car team including drivers Andre Heimgartner, Ryan Simpson and Morgan Haber, while Eggleston Motorsport will also be running a three-car team, with Garry Jacobson, Ant Pederson and Dumbrell behind the wheel.

The Dunlop Development Series have changed the format of the races for the season, including two 40-minute races and two 15-minute qualifying sessions.

While the round opens at the Clipsal 500, teams and drivers will compete for the title across seven-rounds including Winton, Bathurst, Townsville, Sydney, Ipswich and Perth.

The drivers will first hit the Clipsal circuit at 1:20pm for their first practice session for the year.

New V8 Drivers for 2014

As young drivers smashed their debut in the series last year, we decided to look at what the new drivers for 2014 have prepared behind the steering wheel for one of the biggest seasons in the series yet.

V8 Supercars has once again lifted and explored into new depths, and will not only have four manufacturers – but five including the announcement of Volvo’s S60 machine.

The series is at its peak with car and driver development, with four new drivers set to make the grid for this year’s season, and in just over one week the V8 Supercars will rumble on the streets of Adelaide for the Clipsal 500.

Last year’s rookies Scott McLaughlin and Chaz Mostert both picked up race wins, impressing the teams with McLaughlin now the star factory driver at Volvo and Mostert replacing Will Davison at the highly established Ford Performance Racing.

With 2013 rookies impressing, this can only mean that stronger talent will arise from the development series, with Bathurst winner Nick Percat teamed up at Walkinshaw, Jack Perkins racing at team Jeld-Wen, Dunlop Series champion Dale Wood to race with Brad Jones Racing and the newly imported driver from Sweden Robert Dahlgren to finish the line up at the new Volvo team.

These four drivers are extremely talented, and come from a large background of motorsport not only in Australia – but also on the international circuit.

Perkins has a large background in motorsport, racing Aussie Cars, Dunlop Series and Formula Ford, while being a crucial part for the endurance rounds, racing with McLaughlin, Russell Ingall and Tim Slade.

Sweden’s own has come to conquer the Australian V8 series, with Dahlgren’s previous racing results including winning the British, Swedish, Norwegian and Scandinavian Formula Ford Championships, racing in Formula 3 and racing in the World Touring Car Championship for Volvo Polestar Racing.

The new drivers this year bring a wealth of experience and a different culture of racing to the field, which will make for one great V8 Supercars Championship for 2014.

Go Aussie Adam: Rising V8 Ute driver Adam Marjoram

Rising Australian motorsport star Adam Majoram recently caught up with Fiasco Sports to talk all things racing and V8 Utes.

V8 Utes has a strong place in the heart of Australian motorsport and 20 year old Adam Marjoram is set to make his 2014 racing campaign stronger than ever.

While studying a double degree of Economics and Commerce and racing all over Australia, this year is set to be a challenging and exciting year for the Western Australian.

Marjoram was recently signed as part of V8 Supercar’s Erebus Motorsport Academy and Erebus Motorsport V8 Ute team, making his debut round at Adelaide’s Clipsal 500 look very strong.

The V8 Ute driver recently caught up with Fiasco Sports’ journalist Loren Hazelwood to talk about his exciting up-coming season.

Loren: You had a great debut season in the V8 Ute series last year, how will this help your 2014 campaign?

Adam: Yeah, it was a great year learning all the tracks and handle the V8 Utes – they’re very different to any other form of race car! For 2014, I have signed with the Erebus V8 Ute team and the Erebus Academy. With the resources and access to all areas with Erebus, it will help me to develop as a driver on and off the track and provide me with a really competitive car. Hopefully we can push the top 5 consistently!

Loren: Now you just mentioned that Erebus Motorsport have signed you as a ute driver, will their experience in V8 Supercars be beneficial for your second season in V8 Utes?

Adam: For sure, Erebus are an extremely professional outfit and many of the things they have learned in V8 Supercars can be transferred to the V8 Ute team, whether it be technical or PR related.

Loren: You started out your racing career in sprint kart racing all over Australia, how has this helped in getting yourself to the level you are at today?

Adam: Karting is a great base for any young driver. It allows you to learn the fundamentals of racing and race craft. Transitioning into car racing is a hard process, however, the one thing you never lose is that race craft. Coming from Perth, you are very isolated; therefore you really have to travel abroad to race where the competition is. Because of this I was always learning new tracks; this really develops the adaptability of the driver so that when they are immersed into a new environment they can pick it up as quick as possible.

Loren: What has the V8 Ute experience been like?

Adam: It has been amazing! To only be in the car racing scene for two years and getting the chance to race at places like Bathurst, Surfers Paradise and in front of my home crowd at Barbagallo [Perth], has been amazing. I have learned so much about racing over the 2013 season…the tracks, the cars, the media. It has just been a dream come true for me! When I go to the track I am honestly like a kid in a candy shop, there is nowhere else I’d rather be!

Loren: You unfortunately had a massive crash last year at the Gold Coast 500 and had to replace the car for the final round at Sydney, how did you take that challenge of overcoming a crash and coming to grips with a new car?

Adam: Yeah, that was definitely the biggest crash I had been in. You race knowing that accidents like that happen, but you just never expect it to happen to you. I felt pretty sore after the crash as you’d expect, but went straight into exams so I couldn’t see anyone about it! I have since seen a physio, and all is well now. But I was very lucky to get another V8 Ute for the Sydney 500. Unfortunately we were plagued with problems from chronic understeer to overheating engines. That dropped us three positions in the Championship and down to third in the Rookie of the Year Championship which was not ideal.

Loren: You’ve been busy juggling university studies and racing, do you have anything else planned for 2014?

Adam: Yeah, has been a busy, busy year! As part of the Erebus Academy I will be travelling to more V8 Supercar rounds outside of the V8 Ute calendar to learn and help the team. Otherwise, I am looking at getting back into a kart back here in Perth to keep my eye in a little more and keep up the training so that I am at my physical peak whenever I jump into a car! There also may be a couple of cool little things pop up during the year …you’ll have to keep posted.

Loren: The team here at Fiasco Sports will definitely be watching you this year! Is there anyone you would like to thank?

Adam: Thanks! Look everyone that has been instrumental in forging my Motorsport Career has been amazing, namely the support from Auto One, Valvoline, Supercharge Batteries, Nova, my team last year – Williams Race Tech – and and my new team, Erebus Motorsport.

AFTER Todd Hazelwood’s successful 2013 season, Tecalemit Australia has announced they will continue their sponsorship for the South Australian’s racing career in 2014.

Hazelwood is pleased with Tecalemit’s continued bronze investment, making 2014 more possible for the 18-year-old.

“It is an absolute pleasure to be supported by a well-known South Australian company for 2014,” said Hazelwood.

“Without the support of Tecalemit and my other sponsors throughout 2013, the results I had achieved would have not been possible.”

National sales manager of Tecalemit Australia Dean Rothapfel is also pleased to continue supporting Hazelwood for next year.

“We are happy to join Todd again in 2014 as he enters a very exciting period of his professional racing career,” said Rothapfel.

Tecalemit has been a name synonymous in Australia with their lubrication and hoist equipment for over 75 years, starting their business in South Australia in 1941.

The young South Australian will also make his debut in the Dunlop Development Series this weekend at the NRMA Motoring and Services 500.

Why Car of the Future is Good

I’m sure all us motorsport fans have thought it. V8 Supercars is built around the support of bogans and you’re either a Ford or Holden fan. So much speculation was built up across the 2012 season with Nissan and Mercedes-AMG barging their way through the series, but it’s been the best thing yet for the sport.

I have personally followed the V8 Supercar series my whole life. I remember watching the greats like Dick Johnson and Peter Brock battle it out for all of us Holden and Ford fans. I honestly was a sceptic a year ago and I thought this Car of the Future thing wouldn’t work – well, how wrong was I!

Unfortunately for Ford fans, the Falcon is dying in the series, with only six from the blue oval on the grid for this season. Although this hasn’t stopped the blue army from winning races – with three Ford drivers taking wins this season.

Championship wise, you could say it is the tightest battle in the history of the sport and heading into the Enduro season it will definitely be a race to the finish line for the championship at Sandown, Bathurst and on the Gold Coast.

Jame Whincup, who dominated the series last year with his teammate Craig Lowndes alongside him at Triple Eight has endured an interesting season, not winning nearly every race. In fact, Whincup hasn’t won that many at all, as there have been 12 different race winners to date this year (and it’s only just passed halfway through the season).

Not only are more people taking the cake on race wins, there are some top-notch rookies hitting the scene this year. For instance, Scott McLaughlin has won three races this season and also broke the record for being the youngest driver in V8 history to win a race at 19. Then came along young Chaz Mostert, who won Dick Johnson Racing’s first race in two years at Queensland Raceway a few weekends ago.

With more young rookies running in the Dunlop Development Series this year, who knows how next year’s season will go, especially now that two rookies to the series have taken race wins.

Volvo will also join the V8 category next year, so it will only spice up the category for what is to come. Rumours have circulated for what other manufacturers will join the category next year, but of course they won’t tell you until it unfolds!

At this stage of the competition, I definitely wouldn’t be placing bets on who wins the championship this season, so hold on race fans for what is to come!

1-2 Finish for Holden Racing at Townsville

Holden Racing’s Garth Tander has achieved his first win since Bathurst in 2011, with teammate James Courtney holding on in second place for a 1-2 finish.

A race full of strategy saw Holden pit its two VF Commodores, giving the drivers a soft-tyre advantage over most of the field.

Holden Racing decided to run a two-stint strategy, making its drivers pit for second-hand soft tyres.

Despite sustaining damage after kissing the wall at Turn 10 in making a move on Scott McLaughlin, Tander still managed to bring home the win.

The start saw Ford’s Mark Winterbottom get a great jump on the rest of the field, but later his decision not to pit under the Lap 9 safety car caused him to fall to fourth place.

Shane van Gisbergen took third place after running a similar pit-strategy to Holden Racing, making great progress starting closer to the rear of the field.

Russell Ingall and Tony D’Alberto made it a top six effort for Walkinshaw Performance built Commodores, with Craig Lowndes, Tim Slade, McLaughlin and Will Davison rounding out the top 10.

The race’s only retirement was Lee Holdsworth, who had engine dramas with his Erebus Motorsport Mercedes and stopped into the run of Turn 11.

After Race 21 of the championship at Townsville, the current championship standings see Jamie Whincup leading Lowndes by 111 points, with Ford’s Davison and Winterbottom closing in on the series lead.

Whincup Wins in the Top End

Red Bull Racing’s Jamie Whincup has extended his championship lead by winning race 17 of the V8 Supercars Championship at Hidden Valley Raceway.

Whincup steered clear in the action-packed race early on, grabbing first position in the second stint of the 60/60-format race, leading Shane van Gisbergen and James Courtney to the finish line.

Ford Performance Racing’s David Reynolds showed his pace in the top-ten shootout and the first stint of the race, grabbing pole position. Unfortunately within the dying stages of the race, Winterbottom made contact with Reynolds going into the hairpin.

Reynolds finished in 14^th, with Winterbottom awarded a drive-thru penalty causing the teammates to not finish on the podium for FPR.

Rick Kelly produced the best-ever result for the Nissan Altima, finishing in fifth position, as well as Tim Slade who brought home the Erebus Mercedes AMG in sixth.

Newcomer to the category Chaz Mostert placed his personal best, finishing in seventh place for Dick Johnson Racing.
