Winterbottom and Courtney tighten championship at Winton

With the Australian V8 Supercar Championship tighter than ever, it was vital for Mark Winterbottom and James Courtney to take the final wins in Sunday’s two races.

With the current championship leader Jamie Whincup having a horrific weekend at Winton Raceway, rivals Mark Winterbottom and James Courtney were able to close the championship gap by taking the two race wins.

Sunday’s first race saw Jason Bright take pole position, but this did not stop Winterbottom from taking his first race win on home soil at Winton.

Behind the leaders, Alexandre Prémat caused a multi-car accident when rejoining the track at Turn 2, and with championship leader Whincup involved in the accident, he later failed to finish the race.

Others involved in the accident were Russell Ingall, Alex Davison, Garth Tander and Michael Caruso.

The safety car entered the track after the accident, making the dash to the finish close between Winterbottom and Bright, crossing the line 0.4s apart.

Winterbottom failed to qualify at the front of the field for the second race of the day, giving Courtney pole position for the finale.

Courtney managed to take the win, holding first for the entire 34-lap race, with a safety car coming in to play with 10 laps to go.

Young gun Chaz Mostert held second for most of the race, but had to settle for third after Fabian Coulthard took a gamble and put on new tyres during the safety car.

The race was filled with accidents, with Todd Kelly crashing out on the pit-straight at the start of the race, after receiving contact from the front of Whincup’s car, causing the first safety car.

Scott Pye once again had dramas, with the eKol Holden catching fire due to a bent exhaust.

Rick Kelly followed his brother’s suit, after causing contact with Winterbottom at the Turn 5 sweeper, causing damage to his rear suspension and bringing out the second safety car.

Craig Lowndes later received a 25-point penalty for making contact with Caruso’s Nissan, causing him to fall from second to fourth in the championship, with teammate Whincup holding onto the current series lead.

The next round of the championship will be held at Sandown Raceway, starting the season of endurance races.

Third Year Unlucky at Watkins Glen for Ambrose

After dominating the Watkins Glen race in NASCAR for the last two years, Marcos Ambrose was unable to finish the race this year after coming across some bad luck.

Tasmanian Marcos Ambrose had a tough day behind the wheel at Watkins Glen, being taken out of contention for the race with six laps to go.

The Sprint Cup regular won the race in the last two years, and was looking on the money to make it three in a row for the Richard Petty Motorsports team.

Starting from pole position, Ambrose took the lead early on and had control of the race for 51 laps, until an incident occurred on the track when Ambrose was taking his pit-stop.

The #9 Stanley Ford driver was then stuck in pit-lane, causing Ambrose to fall back through the field.

Running outside the top 10 after a race restart, a suspected mechanical fault saw the 36-year-old struggle for pace, forcing him into the wall on the run through turns 2-3-4.

Ambrose was clearly frustrated by the racing incident, chucking his steering wheel inside the cabin of the car, then throwing his helmet against his Ford.

The New York race also saw another past V8 Supercar driver make the field, with Australian Owen Kelly finishing 24th, stating he lost positions due to Ambrose’s crash.

Kelly is set to race again in the Nationwide series with Joe Gibbs Racing, running at the Mid-Ohio circuit next weekend.

After having an unfortunate end to the race last year, Kyle Busch held off Brad Keselowski to claim a thrilling win.

Young Guns Mostert and McLaughlin Take Race Wins at Ipswich

Chaz Mostert has taken his maiden win in the V8 Supercar series, with Scott McLaughlin taking his second this year after an eventful two races in Queensland.

The youngest drivers in the V8 Supercars category won both races at the Coates Hire Ipswich 360, with Scott McLaughlin taking Race 2 and Chaz Mostert taking his maiden victory winning Race 3. 

20-year-old McLaughlin took the first race by leading current series leader Jamie Whincup, making it a top-five finish for Holden.

Mostert then managed to qualify second for Race 3 to Ford Performance Racing’s Will Davison, giving Mostert the advantage at the start in the dry line.

The Dick Johnson Racing driver led the race from start to finish, as McLaughlin failed to challenge after he suffered from a flat front-left tyre.

The flat tyre drama also cost Whincup, James Courtney and Alex Davison crucial positions in the race.

Tim Blanchard also created some drama, causing an oil spill at the entry of Turn 3 under braking, forcing a few drivers to run wide and go off the circuit.

Race 3 also saw Ford take out the top four positions, with Dick Johnson Racing taking its first win since Jonathon Webb won three years ago.

The next round of the V8 Supercar Championship is held at Winton Raceway for the Winton 360, on the 23-25 August.

Tragedy Unfolds as Andrea Antonelli Dies in WSBK Race

25 year-old Andrea Antonelli has sadly passed away during the early stages of the second World Supersport race held at Moscow Raceway. 

Italian World Superbike rider Andrea Antonelli was involved in a collision at Moscow Raceway on Sunday.

The rider tragically succumbed to his injuries in the aftermath of the fatal crash.

The accident was caused through Antonelli losing control of his Kawasaki in the wet weather between turns 13 and 14, before being hit by fellow Superbike rider Lorenzo Zanetti.

The race was immediately red flagged and was later cancelled by officials for safety reasons.

The FIM issued this statement:

“During today’s FIM Supersport World Championsip race, at 1.32pm Italian rider Andrea Antonelli (Team Goeleven Kawasaki) suffered a serious accident on the straight between Turn 14 and Turn 15 wherein he sustained critical injuries.”

“The race was stopped with the red flag and the rider was immediately taken to an ambulance where the medical staff worked to resuscitate him.

“Despite their efforts, Andrea sadly succumbed to his injuries at 2.10pm local time.

“FIM, Dorna and YMS Promotion decided to cancel the activities scheduled for the rest of the day.

“The FIM and everyone involved in motorcycle championships extends its deepest condolences to Andrea’s family, friends, team and Italian Federation at this tragic loss.”

Australian F3 Driver on the Road to Recovery

Despite being involved in a monstrous crash at Hidden Valley in Darwin a few weeks ago, Steel Guiliana will be racing his Formula 3 at Sydney Motorsport Park this weekend. 

Australian Formula 3 driver Steel Guiliana is set to race at this weekend’s round of the championship at Sydney Motorsport Park despite being involved in a crash at Hidden Valley a few weeks ago.

The 22-year-old endured the effects of a high impact crash at turn one, hitting the tyre barriers at the end of the 1.2km straight reaching speeds of 230 k/ph.

Fortunately Guiliana walked away unhurt due to the safety standards of the Formula 3 cars, however his car was too damaged to continue the rest of the round at Hidden Valley.

Guiliana climbed into Team BRM’s car for this weekend’s round of the championship at Sydney Motorsport Park, with the team at R-Tek Motorsport working tirelessly to prepare the car in a short period.

“The team have done a great job to turn this car around ready for Sydney and have been very supportive after my big accident,” said Guiliana.

“It certainly knocked me around but shortly after the race I felt fine and was keen to get back out there.”

“I hope we can have a strong return to the front at my home race and get our championship back on track.”

Guiliana will be racing at his home circuit this weekend, with the Sydney driver currently sixth in the Australian Formula 3 championship.

1-2 Finish for Holden Racing at Townsville

Holden Racing’s Garth Tander has achieved his first win since Bathurst in 2011, with teammate James Courtney holding on in second place for a 1-2 finish.

 

A race full of strategy saw Holden pit its two VF Commodores, giving the drivers a soft-tyre advantage over most of the field.

 

Holden Racing decided to run a two-stint strategy, making its drivers pit for second-hand soft tyres.

 

Despite sustaining damage after kissing the wall at Turn 10 in making a move on Scott McLaughlin, Tander still managed to bring home the win.

 

The start saw Ford’s Mark Winterbottom get a great jump on the rest of the field, but later his decision not to pit under the Lap 9 safety car caused him to fall to fourth place.

 

Shane van Gisbergen took third place after running a similar pit-strategy to Holden Racing, making great progress starting closer to the rear of the field.

 

Russell Ingall and Tony D’Alberto made it a top six effort for Walkinshaw Performance built Commodores, with Craig LowndesTim Slade, McLaughlin and Will Davison rounding out the top 10.

 

The race’s only retirement was Lee Holdsworth, who had engine dramas with his Erebus Motorsport Mercedes and stopped into the run of Turn 11.

 

After Race 21 of the championship at Townsville, the current championship standings see Jamie Whincup leading Lowndes by 111 points, with Ford’s Davison and Winterbottom closing in on the series lead.

Whincup Wins in the Top End

Red Bull Racing’s Jamie Whincup has extended his championship lead by winning race 17 of the V8 Supercars Championship at Hidden Valley Raceway.

Whincup steered clear in the action-packed race early on, grabbing first position in the second stint of the 60/60-format race, leading Shane van Gisbergen and James Courtney to the finish line.

Ford Performance Racing’s David Reynolds showed his pace in the top-ten shootout and the first stint of the race, grabbing pole position. Unfortunately within the dying stages of the race, Winterbottom made contact with Reynolds going into the hairpin.

Reynolds finished in 14th, with Winterbottom awarded a drive-thru penalty causing the teammates to not finish on the podium for FPR.

Rick Kelly produced the best-ever result for the Nissan Altima, finishing in fifth position, as well as Tim Slade who brought home the Erebus Mercedes AMG in sixth.

Newcomer to the category Chaz Mostert placed his personal best, finishing in seventh place for Dick Johnson Racing.

A further two 35-lap races will be held tomorrow to complete the Skycity Triple Crown event in Darwin.

Vettel Claims Pole for Canadian Grand Prix

Redbull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel has taken advantage of the wet circuit conditions at the Montreal circuit, taking his third-straight pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton was second quickest to the German, but the surprise for the session was William’s driver Veltteri Bottas who blitzed through the wet conditions to qualify third.

Monaco-winner Nico Rosberg continued to show his pace placing fourth, with Australian Mark Webber rounding out the top five.

Fernando Alonso struggled once again with the car, only managing sixth fastest, with Jean Eric-Vergne, Adrian Sutil, Kimi Raikkonen and Australian Daniel Ricciardo to start in the top ten.

Ferrari driver Felipe Massa unfortunately finished Q2 in the wall, with the qualifying session then red-flagged with minutes to go.

The two McLarens continued their lack of pace, with Jenson Button and Sergio Perez both missing out on Q3.

Despite qualifying in 19th, Romain Grosjean will surrender his position and start in last place, due to a 10-grid spot penalty from causing an incident at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Lorenzo Claims Italian MotoGP Victory

Jorge Lorenzo steered clear in an eventful grand prix at the Mugello circuit, leading every lap of the Italian grand prix, coming home with the win.

Factory Yamaha rider Lorenzo although did not take an easy win, with team Repsol Honda duo Dani Pedrosa and Marc Marquez applying the pressure from behind throughout the race.

The Mugello crowd were left shocked in the start of the race, with their hero and multiple world champion Valentino Rossi involved in a huge crash on lap one with Rossi collected by Alvaro Bautista at turn four, forcing both riders into the barriers at high speed. Both riders walked away from the crash.

Pedrosa had the jump on the start, but it was only until turn two that Lorenzo took the lead from the Honda rider. Marc Marquez had a great jump at the start of the race from the second row to take third place, defending his position to Andrea Dovizioso.

The top three riders started to drift away from the rest of the pack, with Marquez and Pedrosa both hungry for the race lead. Crutchlow started to catch the front three after he slipped passed Douvizioso.

Jorge Lorenzo eventually gained a strong lead on the Honda duo, out in front by 5 seconds. The battle was then on for second place, with Marquez making his way to second passing Pedrosa.

Unfortunately for 20-year-old Marquez, he crashed out while in second position with three laps to go. Marquez endured his first DNF for the season and handed podium positions to Pedrosa and Cal Crutchlow, with Crutchlow amazingly still racing with a broken leg.

The last lap saw Stefan Bradl make a last-turn move on Dovizioso to take fourth place, ahead of Ducati riders Nicky Hayden and Michele Pirro.

After taking the Italian MotoGP win, Lorenzo has closed his championship gap to Dani Pedrosa to 12 points.

The next MotoGP race will be June 16 at the Circuit de Catalunya for round six of the championship.
