A Tribute to Retiring Webber

Australian Formula 1 driver Mark Webber last night ended all of the rumours circulating the pit paddock and announced he will be moving from the Infiniti Red Bull Racing team to be apart of Porsche’s World Endurance Championship sportscar program.

We can’t ignore the fact that Webber and his young German teammate Sebastian Vettel did not get along like a house on fire, but this was not a considering factor of why the Australian decided to leave the sport.

The 36-year-old believed it was perfect timing to join Porsche’s program, as he believes it is a sensational challenge and the perfect timing for his future work.

With Webber announcing this ground-shaking news, I thought it was time that I’d look at the highlights of the Aussie’s racing career and how it all started.

It all began in 1991, when Mark started racing sprint go-karts around Australia competing against some great names in Australian motorsport. It was only a few years later in 1994 when Webber started racing in open-wheelers.

Formula Ford in Australia in the mid-nineties was the lead way for young Australian drivers who wanted to further their motor racing career.

Mark Webber then struggled with funds for his racing, going over to the UK with virtually no money. Webber raced at the prestigious Formula Ford Festival in 1995 at the Brands Hatch circuit, finishing an astonishing third place on debut.

The 19-year-old at the time was then offered a factory drive with Van Diemen to compete in the European and British Formula Ford championships. Webber went on to win the 1996 British Formula Ford festival that year, which in many cases was known to be a gateway for Formula 1.

After competing in Formula Ford for three years, Webber graduated to Formula 3000 with Alan Docking Racing for the 1997 championship in Europe. Without having a stronger financial backing like Webber and his team had in the Formula Ford season, Webber and the team nearly had to pull out of racing the category halfway through. Fortunately an Australian personal investor came on board and financially helped Webber out.

Webber was approached at the end of his Formula 3 campaign by Mercedes-AMG to compete in a sports car race. He traveled all around the world racing at Japan, Europe and the United States, but his sports car career came to an early end after an aerodynamic fault, which caused Webber to go airborne and flip twice in practice for the 1999 24 Hours of Le Mans race. Webber escaped without injury, but this ended the Mercedes campaign and saw Webber return to open-wheel racing.

Webber made his first steps in Formula 1 in 1999, testing for Arrows F1 team. It wasn’t until 2002 when Mark made his debut racing in Formula 1, where he was teamed up with Minardi Asiatech. Webber impressed on his debut, racing at his home Australian Grand Prix. He qualified 18th for the race, but managed to climb his way through the field to grab fifth place, claiming the first ever points for the Minardi Asiatech team.

2009 marked an important year when Webber was racing for Red Bull that Webber qualified on pole for the first time in Formula 1 at the Nüburgring. This was the first time an Australian driver had claimed pole position since Alan Jones back in 1980. He went on to achieve his first Formula 1 victory despite receiving a drive through penalty early in the race for causing an avoidable collision at the start. Webber went on to dominate the race and win ahead of his teammate Vettel, heading a Red Bull 1–2.

After the German Grand Prix, Webber was ready to take charge in the championship campaign for 2010, having great success in the season taking victories at the Spanish, Monaco and Hungarian Grand Prix’s. Webber unfortunately lost the championship battle to his younger teammate Sebastian Vettel, but finished in third place.

As the tension grew between Vettel and Webber at Red Bull, Webber was determined to go better in 2011. The Australian had to wait all year to claim victory at the Brazilian Grand Prix, but remained consistent throughout the year to claim third place in the driver’s championship.

After coming so close the previous year’s before for the championship title, Webber in 2012 won the British and Monaco Grand Prix’s, which he claims to this day are his sweetest victories.

Webber this year haven’t yet claimed a race victory and is currently sixth in the championship, so it was very interesting to find out that he announced the end of his Formula 1 campaign. He has come so close, yet for the 36-year-old other plans have come in the way and the Aussie believes Porsches is the way to go.

Despite having a huge crash at Le Man’s many years ago in his AMG-Mercedes, Webber believes he can overcome his fear of racing at Le Mans and give it a red hot go.

All the best to Webber and his sports car career, it will be sad to see an Australian leave the sport who has brought much joy to the Formula 1 paddock and will be sadly missed.

Let’s see if our young Aussie driver at Toro Rosso Daniel Ricciardo can take his seat at Red Bull Racing!

Consistency the key for Todd Hazelwood’s championship

17-YEAR-OLD Todd Hazelwood has stayed out of trouble in an eventful round at the Hidden Valley circuit for the third round of the Australian Formula 3 Drivers Championship to take out his third second-place podium for the season.

Hazelwood showed his pace early on in the round, having the quickest time in the Forpark National class on Friday.

The South Australian continued his strong success in the racing, steering clear in an eventful race one which consisted of three safety cars and was cut short by one lap. Races two and three were green throughout, developing some great open-wheel racing.

Todd Hazelwood finished second in all three races this weekend, continuing his strong form in this year’s Forpark National Formula 3 Championship.

“Race one was very eventful, I thought it was best to keep the car straight,” Hazelwood said.

“It was great racing under green for the other two races to really feel what the Fujitsu Racing Dallara was capable of and we showed that in our results.

“For now I am focussing on my championship and looking forward to my first time out at Sydney Motorsport Park for the fourth round of the series.”

The teenager also gained some local support while racing in Darwin.

“It was great to have Hydrokleen and Bosch Service Centre on the side of the car for the Skycity Triple Crown event,” Hazelwood stated.

“Without the local support, this race would have not been possible.

“The atmosphere of the event and the local supporters was overwhelming and I can’t wait to race in Darwin again in the future.”

The Fujitsu Racing driver is currently in second place in the Forpark National Formula 3 Championship.

Todd Hazelwood’s next race is held at Sydney Motorsport Park for the fourth round of the Australian Formula 3 Drivers Championship on the 12 – 14 June.

All F1 Drivers Can Drive

Monaco F1 Grand Prix - Race

A few weeks ago, I was watching the Formula 1 qualifying with another dedicated fan and he turns to me and says, “well, you do know that not all of the Formula 1 drivers can drive … it’s about how much money they’ve got”.

Now, I personally know how expensive motor racing is and that a lot of it has to do with sponsorship and “who” you know. But, this does not mean that the drivers in the current championship can’t steer an F1 car.

So, to back up my statement and prove my learned friend wrong, I conducted a little background research on the current Formula 1 drivers in an effort to prove to him that most, if not all, the drivers have actually achieved a massive amount in their motor racing careers.

For example, current world champion Sebastian Vettel has won numerous go-karting world titles, won the Formula BMW championship and competed with current F1 drivers in the European Formula 3 series. These racers have always raced together, proving that development categories around the world are a vital part towards making it to the top. But it’s not all about the guys at the front of the grid.

The driver’s who are not gaining points in the championship at the moment are also really experienced racers. For example, Esteban Gutierrez, a newcomer to Formula 1, brings a huge amount of experience to Sauber. The Mexican has raced all over the world, having already claimed a Formula BMW European title and finishing third in the GP3 series last year (which he won in 2010). Although Gutierrez is yet to make a podium finish in the big league, this can be put down, at least in part, to the team he is steering for.

Unfortunately not all teams in Formula 1 have the same amount of money, but these drivers are all clearly good enough to win once the richer teams give them a chance.

Just because they are running at the back of the field, it does not mean they are “slow” or “can’t drive”. They are there largely due to their team not being able to fork out for the best gear to make faster Formula 1 cars.

So, for any of you non-believers that think Formula 1 is all about drivers who can’t drive and have heaps of money – think again. The skills all drivers acquire can’t be bought with a couple of million of dollars, it’s so much more than just the money. These guys can drive!

Red Bull Racing’s Jamie Whincup has extended his championship lead by winning race 17 of the V8 Supercars Championship at Hidden Valley Raceway.

Whincup steered clear in the action-packed race early on, grabbing first position in the second stint of the 60/60-format race, leading Shane van Gisbergen and James Courtney to the finish line.

Ford Performance Racing’s David Reynolds showed his pace in the top-ten shootout and the first stint of the race, grabbing pole position. Unfortunately within the dying stages of the race, Winterbottom made contact with Reynolds going into the hairpin.

Reynolds finished in 14th, with Winterbottom awarded a drive-thru penalty causing the teammates to not finish on the podium for FPR.

Rick Kelly produced the best-ever result for the Nissan Altima, finishing in fifth position, as well as Tim Slade who brought home the Erebus Mercedes AMG in sixth.

Newcomer to the category Chaz Mostert placed his personal best, finishing in seventh place for Dick Johnson Racing.

A further two 35-lap races will be held tomorrow to complete the Skycity Triple Crown event in Darwin.

FUJITSU Racing’s Todd Hazelwood has stayed out of trouble in today’s eventful race one to finish in second place for the Forpark National Formula 3 series for the third round of the Australian Formula 3 Drivers Championship.

This success continued from Hazelwood’s fine form in qualifying, only just being pipped for pole position to start second on the grid.

Hazelwood decided to play a smart race, staying out of trouble in an eventful race one which included three safety cars and was shortened by one lap, but full race points were rewarded.

“Race one was very eventful, I thought it was best to keep the car straight,” Hazelwood said.

“My results today proved that being smart and keeping out of trouble was the best option for myself.

“Hopefully tomorrow we can have a race under green conditions.”

The South Australian believes he still has the pace to go one better tomorrow.

“I believe the Fujitsu Racing Dallara prepared by R-Tek Motorsport is on fire this weekend, and hopefully we can show that in races two and three tomorrow.”

Todd Hazelwood will hit the Hidden Valley circuit tomorrow morning at 8:30 AM for race two and 12:20 PM for the prestigious City of Darwin Cup race.

TODD Hazelwood has finally showed the pace he’s had all year and was quickest in today’s first practice, setting the pace for the Forpark National Formula 3 category.

This is the 17-year-old’s first time at the Hidden Valley circuit, with Hazelwood looking forward for what is to come in this weekend’s racing for the third round of the Australian Formula 3 championship.

“It’s good to finally show everyone that we are fast enough to win,” Hazelwood said.

“It will be super close this weekend in the Forpark National class, as neither of us drivers have raced at the Hidden Valley circuit.

“Hopefully we can continue our good form in qualifying and in the first race tomorrow.”

The South Australian has also picked up some local sponsors and supporters for this weekend’s event.

“Without the local support from Bosch Car Service and Hydrokleen, this weekend would not be possible,” Hazelwood stated.

“Hopefully we can re-pay them with some good results.”

The Formula 3 cars were also fastest category today to hit the Darwin circuit, setting the pace for the Australian V8 Supercars who are also racing at the Skycity Triple Crown event.

Todd Hazelwood will hit the Hidden Valley circuit tomorrow morning at 9:10 AM for qualifying and at 12:25 PM for the first race.

Redbull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel has taken advantage of the wet circuit conditions at the Montreal circuit, taking his third-straight pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton was second quickest to the German, but the surprise for the session was William’s driver Veltteri Bottas who blitzed through the wet conditions to qualify third.

Monaco-winner Nico Rosberg continued to show his pace placing fourth, with Australian Mark Webber rounding out the top five.

Fernando Alonso struggled once again with the car, only managing sixth fastest, with Jean Eric-Vergne, Adrian Sutil, Kimi Raikkonen and Australian Daniel Ricciardo to start in the top ten.

Ferrari driver Felipe Massa unfortunately finished Q2 in the wall, with the qualifying session then red-flagged with minutes to go.

The two McLarens continued their lack of pace, with Jenson Button and Sergio Perez both missing out on Q3.

Despite qualifying in 19th, Romain Grosjean will surrender his position and start in last place, due to a 10-grid spot penalty from causing an incident at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Lorenzo Claims Italian MotoGP Victory

Jorge Lorenzo steered clear in an eventful grand prix at the Mugello circuit, leading every lap of the Italian grand prix, coming home with the win.

Factory Yamaha rider Lorenzo although did not take an easy win, with team Repsol Honda duo Dani Pedrosa and Marc Marquez applying the pressure from behind throughout the race.

The Mugello crowd were left shocked in the start of the race, with their hero and multiple world champion Valentino Rossi involved in a huge crash on lap one with Rossi collected by Alvaro Bautista at turn four, forcing both riders into the barriers at high speed. Both riders walked away from the crash.

Pedrosa had the jump on the start, but it was only until turn two that Lorenzo took the lead from the Honda rider. Marc Marquez had a great jump at the start of the race from the second row to take third place, defending his position to Andrea Dovizioso.

The top three riders started to drift away from the rest of the pack, with Marquez and Pedrosa both hungry for the race lead. Crutchlow started to catch the front three after he slipped passed Douvizioso.

Jorge Lorenzo eventually gained a strong lead on the Honda duo, out in front by 5 seconds. The battle was then on for second place, with Marquez making his way to second passing Pedrosa.

Unfortunately for 20-year-old Marquez, he crashed out while in second position with three laps to go. Marquez endured his first DNF for the season and handed podium positions to Pedrosa and Cal Crutchlow, with Crutchlow amazingly still racing with a broken leg.

The last lap saw Stefan Bradl make a last-turn move on Dovizioso to take fourth place, ahead of Ducati riders Nicky Hayden and Michele Pirro.

After taking the Italian MotoGP win, Lorenzo has closed his championship gap to Dani Pedrosa to 12 points.

The next MotoGP race will be June 16 at the Circuit de Catalunya for round six of the championship.

Yamaha Factory rider Jorge Lorenzo set the pace early in Q2, but Pedrosa came from lower in the order to pip Lorenzo later in the session, pushing Lorenzo back to second.

Local rider Andrea Dovizioso impressed his fans by qualifying on the front row in third, despite having an injured neck.

After crashing out at turn 3 earlier in the session, Cal Crutchlow managed to get back on his bike and qualify on the second row in fourth, with Stefan Bradl and Repsol Honda rider Marc Marquez rounding out the second row.

Valentino Rossi raised hopes for his home crowd running inside the top-three throughout Q2, but struggled towards the end of the session and qualified seventh.

Todd Hazelwood Ready for V8 Supercars Event in Darwin

Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship, Todd Hazelwood Racing

SAM_0809

17-year-old Todd Hazelwood will head up north in two weeks time to race at the V8 Supercar event in Darwin, racing in the Australian National Formula 3 series.

The Adelaide-based driver recently raced at Bathurst and Tasmania this year and finished second at both rounds. Hazelwood is hoping he can continue his strong form in Darwin and go one better; take out the win for the National class.

Todd Hazelwood is yet to race around the Hidden Valley circuit, but is looking forward to the challenge ahead of him.

“I can’t wait to head up to Hidden Valley, as I have had great success previously throughout the Northern Territory claiming four state titles in my go-karting career, said Hazelwood.

“The team and myself have worked extra hard over the past six weeks and I am confident I can perform better with some key updates to the car.

“The first two rounds were a great success, finishing second in both rounds with only spending minimal time in the Formula 3 car due to budget constraints.

“Racing in front of the V8 Supercar teams, drivers and supporters is an exhilarating experience and hopefully we can continue our strong championship form in Darwin.”

Todd will hit the Hidden Valley circuit on Friday 14 June. To keep track of Todd Hazelwood Racing’s progress at the V8 Supercar round in Darwin, like his page on Facebook or follow Todd Hazelwood on Twitter.
