Well, with a sprinkle of LIVE television and a teaspoon of emotional driver, you have yourself a recipe for something quite exciting – and of course, rather unfortunate for the driver’s bank account.

The world of Twitter has reacted to the new safety car restart ruling, which caused Jason Bright’s VF Commodore to roll at the Clipsal 500 Adelaide.

New rules were introduced to the Australian V8 Supercars 2014 season and with it controversy between drivers, teams and supporters.

During Race 2 at Round 1 of the championship held at the demanding Clipsal 500 Adelaide circuit, a crash causing a safety car unleashed the new restart format, which saw Jason Bright roll through the Turn 1 centre chicane, and Shane van Gisbergen and Rick Kelly both penalised for jumping the start.

The new rule has caused controversy throughout the field, with drivers, teams and fans having their say on the social media network, Twitter.

The new rule states that drivers cannot exceed 60km/h in the first Acceleration Zone (AZ), therefore all drivers behind the leader have to maintain the speed of 60km/h, controlled by the leader, and cars cannot accelerate until they have passed the final AZ board.

V8 Supercars’ decision to introduce the AZ acceleration zones at restarts was recommended and approved by the V8 Supercar Commission for the 2014 season.

Inside Top-Ten Finish for Hazelwood on Debut at Opening Dunlop Series Round

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN Todd Hazelwood made an impressive start to his Dunlop Development Series campaign, finishing ninth in the second race of the championship.

The 18-year-old had never raced around the Clipsal circuit until this event, making his debut in the series with Matt Stone Racing even sweeter placing inside the top-ten at his home round.

Hazelwood was stronger as each race passed, with Saturday’s Group 1 qualifying showing the rookie on pole position, and after Group 2 qualified the teenager managed an impressive thirteenth spot.

“So stoked to finish inside the top ten on my debut, it hasn’t really kicked in yet because it has been such a hard road to get to this point, but I am over the moon to say the least,” said Hazelwood.

“My aim for this weekend was to just simply survive the technical street circuit, so come away with a top-ten result certainly exceeded our expectations.

“The car was fantastic all weekend, and it was great coming into the round knowing that the car had a very competitive race package, which is a true testament to all the guys at Matt Stone Racing.”

Hazelwood also had a great start yesterday, finishing just outside the top ten in twelfth position after his first race in the V8 series.

After round one of the Dunlop Development Series, Hazelwood currently sits in eleventh spot in the championship on 153 points.

The teenager’s next Dunlop Development Series race will be the second round of the championship, at the Winton 400 on April 4-6.

Recent testing at Jerez has shown that luck in Formula 1 can change almost immediately.

Red Bull Racing’s engineers had to fly back to England to work on electrical issues with the new RB10 car, some issues still being unresolved with the new design at the Bahrain testing, with Adrian Newey explaining, “we have gone too aggressive with the new car design, and that has cost us testing laps.”

Mercedes and Ferrari look to be strong, according to the test days and the amount of laps they have completed and the driver line-ups.

It is set to be a competitive season with Kimi Raikkonen joining Fernando Alonso at Ferrari.

The 2014 season will see three new young drivers step-up from the development ranks to Formula 1, including McLaren’s Kevin Magnussen, Toro Rosso’s Danill Kvyat and Caterham’s Marcus Ericsson.

Due to new weight regulations, teams are required to reconsider car design for the 2014 championship to enhance better fuel consumption as well as using a different size motor, with the 2014 cars using a V6 1.6 litre turbo-charged engine.

The official Formula 1 Championship will kick off with the Australian Grand Prix held in Melbourne’s Albert Park on March 16, starting the nineteen-round season.

At this point in time, Adelaide is the place to be. Not only is the weather fantastic and the people super friendly, but also the events taking place at the moment are taking over the city – and if you’re from another state, why not come down!

The Adelaide Fringe (14 February – 16 March)

You’ll be lining up for hours – but once you are in The Garden of Unearthly Delights, you’ll understand why.

Full of live music, comedy acts, dancing and bars, it’s a beautiful place to be and it’s held right in the heart of the city, ironically right next to the Clipsal 500 circuit (because you know, Adelaide is tiny).

One of the biggest motor racing events in Australia kicks off today and the city streets will rumble of the sweet notes of V8 Supercar racing.

Not only will there be live racing from V8 Supercars and support categories, but musicians too will rock the place, including Bliss n Eso, Empire of the Sun, Kimbra, Guy Sebastian and Keith Urban.

There is live entertainment throughout the whole weekend and also great food, grid girls and fast-paced racing! Tickets are still available here.

The Soundwave Festival never fails to please, with two of the greatest rock bands of the 90s, Green Day and The Living End, to headline this year.

Held down at Adelaide’s Bonython Park, it’s a great place to grab a beer and attend a mosh so you scream until your lungs bleed.

Other main bands playing include Avenged Sevenfold, Alice In Chains, A Day To Remember, Korn, Panic! At The Disco and many more, with tickets still available.

One of the nation’s favourite outdoor festivals, with a great atmosphere and friendly vibe for all ages to enjoy.

WOMAD is run over four days, in Adelaide’s Botanic Park in the city, featuring performances and workshops over seven stages, including music from the world’s best contemporary and traditional musicians.

Not just a public holiday for uni students. The Adelaide Cup is the perfect place to get all dressed up and win some dollars betting on the horses with the best names.

Only a few minutes drive outside the city located at the Morphettville Racecourse, with punters and racing enthusiasts entertained by the Group 2 race of the day, the Yallambee Stud Classic, the Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes and the Group 3 Auraria Stakes.

Future Music Festival (10 March)

Being an obsessive fan of Pharrell Williams, Future is going to go off this year. And not to mention the likes of Deadmau5, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Eric Prydz, Cut Copy, Rudimental and many more performing live, in Adelaide!

Todd Hazelwood’s Ford FG Falcon ready to race

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN Todd Hazelwood will make his first round debut in the Dunlop Development Series at his first home race in three years at Adelaide’s Clipsal 500.

The 18-year-old has never raced around the historic Clipsal circuit, with the teenager more than excited to race infront of his home crowd and have the support from his local sponsors, family and friends.

“It’s more than a dream come true to race at the Clipsal 500 event, after being a spectator my whole life,” said Hazelwood.

“I also cannot wait to make my debut with the team at Matt Stone Racing, our test day the other week went better than expected and I am really looking forward to see how the weekend plans out with the other strong competitors in the field this season.

“It’s amazing to be supported by local South Australian companies and running at one of South Australia’s major motorsport events, and I can’t wait for it to all kick off.”

Hazelwood will first hit the circuit at 1:20pm for Practice 1, with the second session commencing at 4:05pm.

Dunlop Development Series stronger than ever

Each year the V8 Dunlop Development Series grows and this year’s series is set to be huge with 30 entries confirmed for the opening round at Adelaide’s Clipsal 500.

The Official V8 Supercars Series kicks off this week on Adelaide’s streets, with all eyes on the Dunlop Development Series, kicking off the season with 30 entries confirmed.

After last year’s stellar entry list including the names of Casey Stoner, Chaz Mostert, Jack Perkins, Dale Wood and Steve Owen, 2014 is once again looking to be a strong season and will also be a debut for many young and talented drivers.

One driver looking particularly strong for this year is Ash Walsh, who will be racing under Matt Stone Racing for the third year after picking up five race wins in the series last year, just missing out on the title.

Ford Performance Racing are also coming back into the series after a one-year absence, partnering up with young Cameron Waters in an Enzed sponsored FG Falcon.

Ex-V8 Supercar drivers will also make-up the grid again, with Paul Dumbrell making his way into the series this year, alongside Paul Morris and Taz Douglas. 

Erebus today also announced they will make their debut into the series, with their Erebus Academy driver Jack Le Brocq who recently finished third in the Bathurst 12-Hour race is set to make his debut into the series with Image Racing.

Adelaide-based team THR Racing Developments have progressed from the Kumho V8 series to the big stage of Dunlop Series, with Jordan Ormsby and Jay Verdnik the two confirmed drivers for the first round, with Josh Hunter and Matthew Hansen also making the jump from Kumho to Dunlop series.

Two Formula 3 drivers are also set to make their debut into the series this year, with Gold Star champion Tim Macrow to race with Gallagher Motorsport, and winner of Shannons Supercar Showdown, Todd Hazelwood, to compete under Matt Stone Racing.

Brad Jones Racing will also be another team to look out for, with Andrew Jones and Chris Pither set to steer their VE Commodores this year. 

Reigning Dunlop Series team MW Motorsport will once again be strong a three-car team including drivers Andre Heimgartner, Ryan Simpson and Morgan Haber, while Eggleston Motorsport will also be running a three-car team, with Garry Jacobson, Ant Pederson and Dumbrell behind the wheel.

The Dunlop Development Series have changed the format of the races for the season, including two 40-minute races and two 15-minute qualifying sessions. 

While the round opens at the Clipsal 500, teams and drivers will compete for the title across seven-rounds including Winton, Bathurst, Townsville, Sydney, Ipswich and Perth.

The drivers will first hit the Clipsal circuit at 1:20pm for their first practice session for the year.

Nosing into the 2014 Formula 1 Season

So most of us motorsport fans are thinking, what is the deal with the new Formula 1 front-ends? They look weird, but knowing the deal with Formula 1 there is a reason why the cars have changed.

The FIA have decided to add new rules into the sport for 2014, making this year’s cars arguably the most unattractive of our time, but hey… It will be better for the trees.

Formula 1 has changed the size of the engine to a turbo-charged 1.6-litre V6 in a bid to make the cars more environmentally friendly.

Not only have the cars changed for this year, but so have the teams. In fact you could say there was a bit of shuffling going on in the pits during the off-season. Three rookies will also attack the field this year, and Kamui Kobayashi is back for Caterham.

Unfortunately for us Aussies, there is only one Australian participating in the Formula 1 season this year. Young Daniel Ricciardo replaces Mark Webber at Infiniti Red Bull Racing, partnering new-dad Sebastian Vettel.

The biggest test of this year you ask? Well, Kimi Raikkonen back at Ferrari – of course. Going back to a former team with a former world champion by the name of Fernando Alonso is sure to be interesting and very competitive.

And because of our good German friend Sebastian Vettel winning the past four Drivers’ Championships, the FIA has decided to introduce a ‘double points’ feature for the final round, just to make it a little more interesting. Even though the Red Bull driver won the last championship with races to spare, the FIA believe this will spice up the final round.

Another fun fact, drivers this year are able to choose what number they want to race with for the Formula 1 season. Interestingly, Pastor Maldonado chose unlucky 13.

Pre-season testing kicked off a few weeks ago in Jerez, which saw the favourites for this year, Red Bull, flying back to headquarters in England to work on electrical faults. Further testing got under way in Bahrain over the weekend and you know it’s going to be a strong season when the testing can’t identify who will win the first round in Australia.

So, in summary – new cars, new engines, new points advantages, new numbers… I mean, this season is going to be more unpredictable than ever, so please don’t head down to your local TAB and place a bet on the Australian Grand Prix. In case you’re wondering, it all kicks off March 14 on the streets of Melbourne.

As young drivers smashed their debut in the series last year, we decided to look at what the new drivers for 2014 have prepared behind the steering wheel for one of the biggest seasons in the series yet.

V8 Supercars has once again lifted and explored into new depths, and will not only have four manufacturers – but five including the announcement of Volvo’s S60 machine.

The series is at its peak with car and driver development, with four new drivers set to make the grid for this year’s season, and in just over one week the V8 Supercars will rumble on the streets of Adelaide for the Clipsal 500.

Last year’s rookies Scott McLaughlin and Chaz Mostert both picked up race wins, impressing the teams with McLaughlin now the star factory driver at Volvo and Mostert replacing Will Davison at the highly established Ford Performance Racing.

With 2013 rookies impressing, this can only mean that stronger talent will arise from the development series, with Bathurst winner Nick Percat teamed up at Walkinshaw, Jack Perkins racing at team Jeld-Wen, Dunlop Series champion Dale Wood to race with Brad Jones Racing and the newly imported driver from Sweden Robert Dahlgren to finish the line up at the new Volvo team.

These four drivers are extremely talented, and come from a large background of motorsport not only in Australia – but also on the international circuit.

Wood last year claimed the Dunlop Development Series crown, while having a long career in motorsport, starting in motocross before beginning state-level Formula Ford. The Queenslander also paired with newcomer Perkins for the Bathurst 1000, as well as Todd Kelly and Tony D’Alberto.

Sweden’s own has come to conquer the Australian V8 series, with Dahlgren’s previous racing results including winning the British, Swedish, Norwegian and Scandinavian Formula Ford Championships, racing in Formula 3 and racing in the World Touring Car Championship for Volvo Polestar Racing.

The new drivers this year bring a wealth of experience and a different culture of racing to the field, which will make for one great V8 Supercars Championship for 2014.
