Well, another season of Formula 1 is done and dusted, with the time now coming to say goodbye to our Aussie mate, Mark Webber.

And what a great finale at Brazil. Webber got an OK start (for him…) before carving through the field, making outstanding passes on Lewis Hamilton and one of his best mates Fernando Alonso, proving to me that he still has it – even at his last race. Watching him just made me realise this was going to be the last time we were going to see old mate Webber on the track in a Formula 1 car.

Webber had a fantastic career, showing us Australians that he could do it and by hell – he has made us proud. It was just fantastic to see him holding the Aussie flag on the podium in Brazil and I’m sure he will be doing our country just as proud while racing for Porsche next year.

Before all of the fame and fast race cars, Webber took the gamble to go from racing Formula Fords in Australia to trying his hand in Europe. Along the way he made it look possible that even without a lot of money, you could still make it to the pinnacle of motor racing.


And thank God he did. With Webber departing from Red Bull Racing and ditching his rival Sebastian Vettel, our fresh new Aussie talent Daniel Ricciardo gets his chance. Stepping up from the Toro Rosso Formula 1 team to Red Bull Racing, he gets his show with arguably the strongest team in the series, period.

Ricciardo of course will have a tonne of pressure next year, but the young Aussie knows he can do it. Moreover, the blonde German won’t threaten him, something which is slightly hard to imagine considering his teammate is a four times world champion.

So Mark, you have done Australia proud over the years. From your first Grand Prix in Australia, to finishing on the podium in your final race, we have been lucky to have someone like yourself. You demonstrated to the world what true Aussie grit really is. Thankyou, you’ve been a blast to watch.

Now c’mon Dan, show this German how it is done.


Formula 4 confirmed in Australia for 2015

A new development category will join the Australian motorsport world in 2015.

The Confederation of Australian Motorsport today confirmed that the FIA category Formula 4 will begin racing in Australia in the 2015 season.

Formula 4 will join popular open-wheeler developer categories Australian Formula 3 Drivers Championship, Australian Formula Ford and Formula Vee to help springboard young drivers into overseas categories, making an easier pathway to Formula 1.

The FIA Formula 4 concept currently sees a control 1600cc engine, with a carbon-monocoque chassis to add to the wings-and-slicks, which will be a control item for the category.

CAMS chief Eugene Arocca believes this is a step-forward for young drivers, essentially making their first step from karting to Formula 1.

“We are always looking for new and innovative ways for our great sport to grow and Formula 4 is certainly that,” said Arocca.

“We have already had conversations with a number of parties who are interested in being involved, so an open tender process provides everyone with a chance to take on this exciting opportunity in partnership with CAMS and we plan to announce the successful party in due course.

“I strongly believe that the example of Australia will be followed very soon by many other countries.”

Confirmation of Formula 4 leaves a slim future for Australian Formula 3, with two wings-and-slicks open-wheeler categories coming across as unsustainable in Australia.

Formula 4 is part of an international open-wheel pathway devised by FIA Single Seater Commission chairman Gerhard Berger, already popular in the United Kingdom.

The category’s main mission is to make open-wheel racing more affordable, teaching young drivers how to work with an engineer and understand the dynamics behind aerospace.

Expect more news in the coming weeks with CAMS’ announcement of the governing parties involved in the up-coming category.

MotoGP Championship wide open after Lorenzo’s Australian victory

Jorge Lorenzo has kept the 2013 title hunt going, taking a controversial win at Phillip Island in Australia.

Jorge Lorenzo has kept the title chase alive, taking the win in today’s Australian Grand Prix at the Phillip Island circuit.

The Spaniard started on pole position ahead of his championship rival Marc Marquez, with Marquez unable to wrap-up the title in Australia.

With the Phillip Island circuit recently resurfaced, this caused major tyre degradation, with  Bridgestone ruling a mandatory bike swap in the middle of the race, causing a major change in the outcome of the race.

Lorenzo had a great battle with the Repsol Honda team of Marquez and Dani Pedrosa, holding the pair off going into the mandatory bike swap pit-stop.

Pedrosa pitted first from the winning trio, but later had to drop a position when he was caught exceeding 60km/h in pit-lane.

Lorenzo and Marquez stayed out when Pedrosa was pitting, with the pair set to pit at the same time, but a communication error saw Marquez hold out an extra lap, therefore missing the pit window of Lap 10.

Marquez was then penalised by being black flagged from the grand prix, resulting in a DNF for the 20-year-old.

The battle was then between Lorenzo and Pedrosa, but the Yamaha factory rider was too strong, taking the win and crawling back an 18-points gap for the MotoGP title.

Pedrosa finished second, with Valentino Rossi making the podium in third place.

Only two rounds remain in the MotoGP 2013 season, with the next round held at Suzuka next weekend.

Whincup takes pole in thrilling shootout

Holden’s Jamie Whincup has taken his maiden pole position at Mount Panorama in the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, with a time of 2:07.88. 

Whincup started last in the shootout with his previous pole position in qualifying the day before, taking first by only 0.2 to Ford rival Mark Winterbottom.

The Redbull Racing Australia driver was the only driver in the session to get into the 2:07s, with Winterbottom only just shy with a time of 2:08.07.

A shootout held later in the day than normal, the sun came out and the track became quicker and quicker throughout the session, giving an advantage to those qualifying quicker the day before.

Jason Bright set the third quickest time, just edging out Shane van Gisbergen who set a strong lap holding over James Courtney. 

29 cars will start the race today, racing around Mount Panorama for 161 laps over 6 and a half hours.

Shannons Supercar Showdown Season Three

Eight young rookies this year will battle it out in a series of challenges to claim the number one prize of winning the Shannons Supercar Showdown.

The series is back for it’s third season, this year under Ford Performance Racing and also with a brand new prize, a 2014 testing contract with Ford Performance Racing and a race at Homebush this year in a Dunlop Development Series car.

Professional V8 Supercar drivers Will Davison and Mark Winterbottom will be the driver coaches this year, with brand new host motor racing reporter Briony Ingerson.

The rookies confirmed include two British drivers of Adrian Campfield and Dan Cammish, Formula Ford’s Macauley JonesChelsea Angelo and James Golding, Formula 3 stars Tim Macrow and Todd Hazelwood and current V8 Ute driver Craig Dontas.

This year’s rookies will split into teams of four, either belonging to Team Davison or Team Winterbottom.

They will compete in teams to earn points, testing their mental and psychical ability, race on simulators and compete in motorkhanas, Formula Ford, Sprint Karts and of course, V8 Supercars.

The team coach will then allocate a certain amount of points to the winner, with whoever having the most points earning themselves a place in the final four.

There is also a captain’s choice option, so if the contestant doesn’t earn many points, they may still have a place in the final four.

Unlike the two previous series, there are no eliminations this year.

Todd Hazelwood More Than Ready for Phillip Island

PREVIOUSLY RACING Formula Ford at the Phillip Island circuit last year, Todd Hazelwood is more than ready to attack the island in his Fujitsu Racing/R-Tek Dallara for the sixth round of the Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship.

Currently second in the Forpark National Formula 3 Championship, the 17-year-old is more than confident in closing the championship gap, for the first time this year having previous experience at a circuit on the Formula 3 calendar.

Since having a few weeks break since Queensland, the South Australian has been busy competing on season three of the Shannons Supercar Showdown show, keeping Hazelwood more than ready for this weekend.

“The championship so far has been really close, and racing at Phillip Island this weekend will make the title chase closer than ever,” said Hazelwood.

“I haven’t raced on the track since it’s been resurfaced, so I’m looking forward to going out on the track for practice tomorrow to see what elements of the circuit have changed.

“I have had good success in the past at Phillip Island, hopefully we can continue that form and put it towards our championship.”

Todd Hazelwood Ready for V8 Supercars Event in Darwin

17-year-old Todd Hazelwood will head up north in two weeks time to race at the V8 Supercar event in Darwin, racing in the Australian National Formula 3 series.

The Adelaide-based driver recently raced at Bathurst and Tasmania this year and finished second at both rounds. Hazelwood is hoping he can continue his strong form in Darwin and go one better; take out the win for the National class.

Todd Hazelwood is yet to race around the Hidden Valley circuit, but is looking forward to the challenge ahead of him.

“I can’t wait to head up to Hidden Valley, as I have had great success previously throughout the Northern Territory claiming four state titles in my go-karting career, said Hazelwood.

“The team and myself have worked extra hard over the past six weeks and I am confident I can perform better with some key updates to the car.

“The first two rounds were a great success, finishing second in both rounds with only spending minimal time in the Formula 3 car due to budget constraints.

“Racing in front of the V8 Supercar teams, drivers and supporters is an exhilarating experience and hopefully we can continue our strong championship form in Darwin.”

Stoner in Australia? Bloody Oath

I remember it was about this time last year, when the media was talking about Casey Stoner retiring and how much it was going to hurt the MotoGP category. Everyone had their opinion about why Stoner should stay, how useless he was going to be in a V8 Supercar and how Honda would not be able to find a replacement for the Australian world champion.

Well look who’s laughing now.

If anything, the 27-year-old made his best decision of a lifetime. I mean, he has a family now and with the recent death of Marco Simoncelli, it’s definitely safer to be on four wheels than two.

And not even that, Stoner made way for a true star in the making. Marc Màrquez who is only 20 years old, a few weeks ago became the youngest ever rider to win a MotoGP race. Incredible! Màrquez also finished second at the Spanish Grand Prix to his teammate Dani Pedrosa from Repsol Honda. If anything the team is on better form than what they were this time last year, with the team not even barely damaged with the loss of world champion Stoner. Now whoever said Stoner was “irreplaceable” was clearly not thinking about the future.

Even though Casey Stoner is only racing in the Dunlop Development Series (category below V8 Supercars) he has been working with arguably the best V8 team in the main game (RedBull Racing Australia – Triple 8 Race Engineering) and is now an official representative for Holden Australia. Not only is Casey’s credibility growing, he’s now getting a lot more media attention. The MotoGP champ has only raced two championship rounds this year so it is still early days to determine whether he is good enough for the main game next year, but the team I’m sure will focus on Casey’s early development in the Holden VE Commodore and will see out the rest of the season in the development series.

Unfortunately with MotoGP being apart motorsport, it receives minimal media attention, either in print or broadcast journalism as of course, it isn’t as popular as the AFL, NRL etc. Not only has Casey Stoner grabbed the media, he’s also promoted the Dunlop Development Series, which for years has been underrated, with no coverage what-so-ever. Only problem here is that the only person who gets coverage in the series is Casey and the focus has been stolen from the young kids winning the races in the series.

Stoner I don’t believe has the amount of race craft at the moment on four wheels as some of the younger drivers in the development field, so he will have to test like crazy with his team from Triple 8 Race Engineering. Not only is the MotoGP with the best team, he also can receive some of the best V8 mentoring from current V8 Supercar Champion Jamie Whincup and also newly crowned all-time-best V8 driver Craig Lowndes. I mean Stoner has some of the best help on offer, so by the end of this year’s development series Stoner should be on the money.

I know Casey Stoner has a massive fan base from many Australians – on the other hand there are also many Australians who dislike Stoner and would rather someone like Valentino Rossi win races. It is a massive culture change for Stoner to come back and live in Australia so I believe we should all stop bagging him and support the Aussie who wants to race over here. Yes, he has a long way to go, but he’s only raced at Clipsal and Barbagallo. There is plenty more tracks for Stoner to prove himself to the V8 field and I can tell you, it will be one interesting year with the MotoGP champ in V8s.

Let’s just hope he doesn’t end up like Wayne Gardner…

75 Years Of The Bathurst Motor Festival

Over the Easter long weekend, Bathurst celebrated it’s 75th year celebration of the Bathurst Motor Festival, held at the historic Mount Panorama raceway.The circuit was first opened in 1938 in conjunction with the Australian Grand Prix. Since that date, the festival has been in operation throughout the Easter long weekend, making Mount Panorama the oldest motor racing circuit in Australia, also amongst one of the oldest tracks in the world.

But history aside, everyone knows how iconic this Bathurst circuit is. This year the turnout for the event was huge, with categories including Formula 3, Formula Vee, Group N Historic Touring Cars, NSW Production Touring Cars, Production Sports Cars, Porsche Club of NSW and NSW Road Racing Club

Of course, the racing for the weekend was the highlight, with all types of weather coming to and from the circuit and drivers turning on the racing for all the fans.

The Mount Panorama circuit opened on Friday, with practice scheduled for all the teams and drivers entered in the event.

Saturday saw the first of qualifying and racing, with the Formula 3 cars breaking the qualifying lap record, a lap time of 2:03:239 set by Nathan Morcom. To put things into perspective, the fastest V8 Supercar lap around Bathurst was set by Craig Lowndes in 2010, with a lap time of 2:06.801!

With lap record pace being set around the circuit, every driver and team in the paddock thought it was their turn to break the race records on Sunday.

The Bathurst weather thought otherwise, as the track was declared wet on Sunday.

This meant trouble, with some fields reaching more than 55 drivers and on a circuit so steep and twisty, some drivers unfortunately found the wall. Luckily enough, everyone who did crash in the racing was a-okay.

Over 10,000 attended the event; with the festival being a huge success with fantastic racing put on by all the drivers.
