AFTER having a successful start to the Dunlop Series season at the Clipsal 500 Adelaide, Todd Hazelwood is ready to continue his championship at the second round of the series at Winton Raceway this weekend.

The 18-year-old had a successful test day last Saturday at Queensland Raceway with Matt Stone Racing, with the teenager making the most of the bad weather getting great wet practice.

“The test day was great for the team and myself, at first it didn’t look like we would get any dry running in, but after three sessions the sun was out and the track was in good condition to do some fast laps,” Hazelwood said.

“I learned a lot throughout the day, it was great to understand how the car handles in the damp conditions and to finesse my technique throughout the rest of the day.

“There is still a lot of room for improvement, I need to continue to learn as much as I can to give myself the best opportunity to succeed this year.”

The South Australian is currently sitting outside the top ten of the Dunlop Series Championship in 11th on 153 championship points.

The Dunlop Series will be running alongside the V8 Supercars this weekend at the Winton 400 as a support category, with the Dunlop Series set to hit the circuit for the first time Friday morning at 10:35am local time for Practice 1.

Inside Top-Ten Finish for Hazelwood on Debut at Opening Dunlop Series Round

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN Todd Hazelwood made an impressive start to his Dunlop Development Series campaign, finishing ninth in the second race of the championship.

The 18-year-old had never raced around the Clipsal circuit until this event, making his debut in the series with Matt Stone Racing even sweeter placing inside the top-ten at his home round.

Hazelwood was stronger as each race passed, with Saturday’s Group 1 qualifying showing the rookie on pole position, and after Group 2 qualified the teenager managed an impressive thirteenth spot.

“So stoked to finish inside the top ten on my debut, it hasn’t really kicked in yet because it has been such a hard road to get to this point, but I am over the moon to say the least,” said Hazelwood.

“My aim for this weekend was to just simply survive the technical street circuit, so come away with a top-ten result certainly exceeded our expectations.

“The car was fantastic all weekend, and it was great coming into the round knowing that the car had a very competitive race package, which is a true testament to all the guys at Matt Stone Racing.”

Hazelwood also had a great start yesterday, finishing just outside the top ten in twelfth position after his first race in the V8 series.

After round one of the Dunlop Development Series, Hazelwood currently sits in eleventh spot in the championship on 153 points.

The teenager’s next Dunlop Development Series race will be the second round of the championship, at the Winton 400 on April 4-6.

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN Todd Hazelwood will make his first round debut in the Dunlop Development Series at his first home race in three years at Adelaide’s Clipsal 500.

The 18-year-old has never raced around the historic Clipsal circuit, with the teenager more than excited to race infront of his home crowd and have the support from his local sponsors, family and friends.

“It’s more than a dream come true to race at the Clipsal 500 event, after being a spectator my whole life,” said Hazelwood.

“I also cannot wait to make my debut with the team at Matt Stone Racing, our test day the other week went better than expected and I am really looking forward to see how the weekend plans out with the other strong competitors in the field this season.

“It’s amazing to be supported by local South Australian companies and running at one of South Australia’s major motorsport events, and I can’t wait for it to all kick off.”

Hazelwood will first hit the circuit at 1:20pm for Practice 1, with the second session commencing at 4:05pm.

Dunlop Development Series stronger than ever

Each year the V8 Dunlop Development Series grows and this year’s series is set to be huge with 30 entries confirmed for the opening round at Adelaide’s Clipsal 500.

The Official V8 Supercars Series kicks off this week on Adelaide’s streets, with all eyes on the Dunlop Development Series, kicking off the season with 30 entries confirmed.

After last year’s stellar entry list including the names of Casey Stoner, Chaz Mostert, Jack Perkins, Dale Wood and Steve Owen, 2014 is once again looking to be a strong season and will also be a debut for many young and talented drivers.

One driver looking particularly strong for this year is Ash Walsh, who will be racing under Matt Stone Racing for the third year after picking up five race wins in the series last year, just missing out on the title.

Ford Performance Racing are also coming back into the series after a one-year absence, partnering up with young Cameron Waters in an Enzed sponsored FG Falcon.

Ex-V8 Supercar drivers will also make-up the grid again, with Paul Dumbrell making his way into the series this year, alongside Paul Morris and Taz Douglas. 

Erebus today also announced they will make their debut into the series, with their Erebus Academy driver Jack Le Brocq who recently finished third in the Bathurst 12-Hour race is set to make his debut into the series with Image Racing.

Adelaide-based team THR Racing Developments have progressed from the Kumho V8 series to the big stage of Dunlop Series, with Jordan Ormsby and Jay Verdnik the two confirmed drivers for the first round, with Josh Hunter and Matthew Hansen also making the jump from Kumho to Dunlop series.

Two Formula 3 drivers are also set to make their debut into the series this year, with Gold Star champion Tim Macrow to race with Gallagher Motorsport, and winner of Shannons Supercar Showdown, Todd Hazelwood, to compete under Matt Stone Racing.

Brad Jones Racing will also be another team to look out for, with Andrew Jones and Chris Pither set to steer their VE Commodores this year. 

Reigning Dunlop Series team MW Motorsport will once again be strong a three-car team including drivers Andre Heimgartner, Ryan Simpson and Morgan Haber, while Eggleston Motorsport will also be running a three-car team, with Garry Jacobson, Ant Pederson and Dumbrell behind the wheel.

The Dunlop Development Series have changed the format of the races for the season, including two 40-minute races and two 15-minute qualifying sessions. 

While the round opens at the Clipsal 500, teams and drivers will compete for the title across seven-rounds including Winton, Bathurst, Townsville, Sydney, Ipswich and Perth.

The drivers will first hit the Clipsal circuit at 1:20pm for their first practice session for the year.

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN Todd Hazelwood has confirmed he will race the 2014 Dunlop Development Series, racing with Queensland-based team Matt Stone Racing.

The 18-year-old will race in an ex-Stone Brother Racing’s Ford FG Falcon, making his debut with the team at his home round in Adelaide, the Clipsal 500.

Hazelwood is excited to announce his new venture into the series and believes this is a massive step forward for his racing career.

“I’m very proud and excited to be part of this year’s championship, it was a huge challenge by everyone involved to make this happen and I can’t wait to kick the year off at my home event, the Clipsal 500,” Hazelwood said.

“The year will be a steep learning curve for me and I will be going into the championship with a realistic mindset … but like anyone else in the field, I want to perform at my best and I believe I have one of the best packages to do that.”

The teenager had his first test day with the team last week at Queensland Raceway, which was a great success.

“My first test day last week was very productive and it’s a pleasure to work with such an experienced and professional team, they know how to maximise the potential out of both the driver and the race car which will be a massive bonus for my first season.”

Team owner Matt Stone was also impressed with Hazelwood’s first test and looks forward to the first round in Adelaide.
“It’s good to run a rookie again in a V8 and we were impressed with Todd’s ability to quickly adapt to driving a V8 and had a very productive day testing,” Stone said.

“We have faith that Todd has the skill to drive the car competitively at Clipsal and we will be working on his race-craft and comfort ability with all the other cars around him.

“It can be very daunting racing a V8 around a street circuit but we have every faith that Todd will continue to impress.”

Hazelwood also has worked hard in the off-season to gain the support of Tecalemit, Airtec, Repco, Da Mario’s Pizza, Slape & Sons, Gadget Graphics and Winning Spirit.

TODD Hazelwood has secured more support for the 2014-racing season, with Repco Australia and Airtec Corporation announcing their bronze sponsorship for the South Australian.

Airtec Corporation will be continuing their support from Hazelwood’s successful season in the Formula 3 Championship, where the teenager finished second in the national series.

Airtec are a name to remember for digital tyre inflation, with their innovative technology suitable for a wide range of industries including mining, military, aviation, tyre retailers, service stations, mechanical workshops and transport.

“After a successful 2013 National Formula 3 championship, Airtec Corporation are again pleased to support Hazelwood Racing in 2014 and we are sure Todd and his team will achieve some great results in this years championship,” says managing director of Airtec David Hewett.

Repco Australia have joined Hazelwood’s racing career for 2014, with the automotive parts company having had a long history being involved with motorsport in Australia, and the 18-year-old is proud to be associated with a company with such an impressive racing history.

AFTER Todd Hazelwood’s successful 2013 season, Tecalemit Australia has announced they will continue their sponsorship for the South Australian’s racing career in 2014.

Hazelwood is pleased with Tecalemit’s continued bronze investment, making 2014 more possible for the 18-year-old.

“It is an absolute pleasure to be supported by a well-known South Australian company for 2014,” said Hazelwood.

“Without the support of Tecalemit and my other sponsors throughout 2013, the results I had achieved would have not been possible.”

National sales manager of Tecalemit Australia Dean Rothapfel is also pleased to continue supporting Hazelwood for next year.

“We are happy to join Todd again in 2014 as he enters a very exciting period of his professional racing career,” said Rothapfel.

Tecalemit has been a name synonymous in Australia with their lubrication and hoist equipment for over 75 years, starting their business in South Australia in 1941.  

The young South Australian will also make his debut in the Dunlop Development Series this weekend at the NRMA Motoring and Services 500. 

Todd Rounds Second Place in F3 Championship

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN Todd Hazelwood has sealed second place in the Forpark National Formula 3 championship, after taking second place at the final round of the Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship at Sandown Raceway.

The 18-year-old was the most consistent driver in the Forpark National class throughout the entire seven-round season, winning one round and finishing second in the other six.

Qualifying saw Hazelwood finish third fastest, despite holding provisional pole throughout the session.

The first race at Sandown saw the top three only separated by twenty one-thousands of a second, battling throughout the race to take third place.

With the teenager starting from third place on the grid in race two, Hazelwood had a great battle for second with the championship winner, just missing out on second being passed on the final lap.

Race three Hazelwood had a great start, and was behind the leader until lap 8, when the Fujitsu Racing/R-Tek Dallara was showing low fuel on the dash, with the teenager then having to cruise to the finish line, crossing the chequered in second position.

“It was good to finish the year off with a solid second position finish in the championship,” said Hazelwood.

“This weekend was a little bit frustrating, we were hoping to finish off the year with a win, but it wasn’t meant to be so we settled for second.

“I’d like to thank my sponsors for their continuing support, without them I would have not achieved what I have this year, and I hope that we can continue this great form in 2014 and bounce back even stronger.”

Hazelwood would also like to thank his team at R-Tek Motorsport and his mechanic Pauly for accepting him in for the 2013 Forpark National Formula 3 championship.

The teenager will continue working hard for his 2014 season, with updates to follow soon on what he plans to pursue.

AUSTRALIAN FORMULA 3 racer Todd Hazelwood has taken out the grand finale of the Shannons Supercar Showdown, winning series three of the motor racing reality TV show.

The grand prize entitles the South Australian to a testing contract with Ford Performance Racing, as well as a race in the Dunlop Development Series race which will be held at the final round of the V8 Supercar Championship, the Sydney 500 at Homebush.

The 18-year-old went through several challenges among seven other rookies, having Ford Performance Racing’s Will Davison as his team coach, along with Mark Winterbottom and Tim Edwards also watching his progress throughout the show.

Hazelwood is ecstatic with the result, with the win really boosting his career progress.

“This is absolutely phenomenal, can’t believe I’ve won the show with the smallest of margins and to top it off be connected with leading V8 Supercar team Ford Performance Racing,” said Hazelwood

“The competition in the show was really tight between everyone and especially the Davison team, and after a long hard eight weeks, it was awesome to finish it all off with a win.

“Both Shannons and Ford Performance Racing have given me a once in a lifetime opportunity, I can’t wait to test their cars and experience the V8 Supercars for the first time.”

The Shannons Supercar Showdown ran over eight episodes, airing on Seven Network’s 7mate, with all episodes available to watch on YouTube among other special features.

The South Australian is set to test in a FPR Falcon before his Dunlop Development Series race in Shannons colours at the Sydney 500, over December 6-8.

Hazelwood also has his final round of the Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship, currently second in the championship and held at Sandown Raceway, November 15-17.

17-YEAR-OLD Todd Hazelwood has finished second in the Forpark National class in a thrilling finale at Phillip Island for the sixth round of the Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship.

The South Australian had previously raced at the Phillip Island circuit last year in Formula Ford; the first time in this year’s championship Hazelwood had previous experience at a circuit.

Qualifying saw Hazelwood set the third fastest time in the Forpark National class, enduring a close battle with his teammate throughout the session and also lapping the original track record.

The teenager finished third in the first 9-lap race, second in race 2 and had a fantastic battle with his teammate in the final feature 14-lap race to finish second for the round.

“I had a great battle with my teammate in the final race,” said Hazelwood.

“Going side by side through turn 1 and also the last three corners certainly got the heart rate racing!”

Once again Hazelwood continued to show his pace and his place in the Forpark National championship, currently running in second.

“This weekend has once again been very consistent and successful, but it wasn’t strong enough,” said Hazelwood.

“I felt this weekend was my best opportunity to close the gap to the Forpark National class championship leader, but unfortunately the gap has slightly increased.

“I really enjoyed racing at Phillip Island, previously having great success in the past and it was great to continue my strong form at this exciting circuit.”

The South Australian will be working super hard in preparation to ensure he finishes the year off with a good result and to thank everyone involved who has made this year in Formula 3 happen.

The final round of the Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship will be held at Sandown Raceway on November 15-17.
